Ip Man (2008)

Not exactly new, but I saw bored last night and looking for a crappy martial arts movie to watch and picked this. It was immediately apparent that this was not, in fact, a crappy martial arts movie. It is now one of my favorite movies. Period. This movie is loosely based on the life of Yip Man, Bruce Lee's teacher and takes place just before and during the Japanese invasion of China during WWII. Uncharacteristically of martial arts movies, this one actually has good acting along with some of the best choreography that I have ever seen.

That said, here's a fight scene from the movie (sorry, embedding disabled):

I am glad you posted this review. I have been wondering about this movie. I think I will que it up on Netflix streaming.

No problem! I had been seeing that movie on the home page forever and figured that it was just another crappy MA movie. I'm really glad that I clicked on it!

I watched this a while back, good movie, Donnie Yen has some lighting fast hands. There is also Ip Man 2 on Netflix as well, I liked it a little better then the first one, it has some better fighting scenes in it I thought. Also there is a Bruce Lee part towards the end.

I liked Ip Man 2, but didn't think it was quite as good as the first one. imo, it was lacking the the emotional force that the first movie had.

There is a third one as well, but I wouldn't worry about that one. Donnie isn't even IN it.
